The biting tongue is an awful experience for everyone. Most of us have had this experience at least once in our lifelong. Once you bit your tongue, you feel that you cannot eat or drink anything for a short period of time. You may wonder hearing that biting the tongue severely is considered to be one of the dental emergency issues. When children bit their tongue, it is usually minor but severe for adults. In minor cases, the injury heals on its own within a week. But on another one, medical care is usually needed. As an expert at Walk In Dental Clinic, people think bleeding after biting indicates emergency attention, but it is wrong.

Our tongue is a sensitive part of our body. It starts bleeding even with a very small bite. So, do not get worried if you observe bleeding. You may bite your tongue when you are running and fall suddenly. It may also happen in sports injuries and accidents. Chewing hard can be even another cause of biting your tongue. Sometimes some people are used to grinding their teeth and biting their tongue at night when sleeping. A strong bite can lead to tongue bleeding. If you are used to doing this, it is better to visit a specialist and get a consultation to stop this habit.

As mentioned above, most cases are minor ones. You can solve this tiny problem at home. First of all, wash your hands carefully. Use soap and warm water to avoid bacteria enter your mouth. Do not touch your tongue with dirty hands at all. If your tongue is bleeding (not severely), first rinse it to make it clear to observe. Then press your tongue gently. In this way, a blood clot will be made and stops bleeding. Until you feel pain in your tongue, avoid eating hard and crunchy foods. Choose soft and watery foods. Cold compress is a good remedy to help to reduce the swelling.

So, when is it considered an emergency case?

Emergency Medical Attention

If you:

  • Bite your tongue, and then it starts bleeding severely and permanently,
  • Bleeding stops but starts again,
  • You feel an awful unbearable pain,
  • Your tongue’s form has changed clearly,
  • You feel having a fever,

You should go to an emergency dental clinic to get help. When you bite your tongue, you are aware of what you have done and how it has happened. This circumstance helps the doctor a lot. The doctor examines your wound and its severity. Sometimes, just painkillers and over-the-counter pain relievers are prescribed to help you tolerate the pain until the healing time is passed. But if the wound is so large, and there is no way to stop the bleeding, there is no way except to stitch your wound. Of course, this is a very rare case.

Ignoring the Problem

As mentioned above, the biting tongue is not usually an emergency problem. But if you ignore this problem, further complications will happen. Infection is one of the issues of neglecting your wound. This infection may spread to other parts of your body and result in more complicated oral and overall health.

Wisdom teeth are located in the deepest part of the mouth, in other words, the bottom of the mouth. This question arises in the minds of many people, why do we have wisdom teeth? Why should it be removed? What happens if we have it removed?

The third molar is called the wisdom tooth. Early humans had larger bones and skeletons because early humans ate raw and hard food, so they needed more molar teeth and stronger displacement. Over time, as human food becomes softer, their jawbones are smaller. Therefore, the last molar gradually loses enough space for growth and result in several complications. In this case, the patient should refer to the emergency dental office to have it extracted or removed during dental surgery.

Why Is It Called the Wisdom Teeth?

The bud usually starts at the age of 11 or 12. This tooth erupts between 17 and 24 years old and at the same time with intellectual maturity, which is why it is called a wisdom tooth. It is better for people at this age to have checked their wisdom teeth by a dentist so that if there is a problem, they can easily extract it. Sometimes due to the poor growth of wisdom teeth, the inner part of the mouth may be bitten, and this factor causes infection in the mouth.

How Many Wisdom Teeth Are There in the Mouth?

Each person has four permanent molars. There are four wisdom teeth in every two jaws of every human being, which are, in fact, the last teeth in the maxillary arch. However, most of the time, it does not happen. If the wisdom teeth do not erupt properly, they may damage the teeth adjacent to the jawbone or the nervous system. In other words, this tooth may not grow in some people because wisdom teeth do not form in some people during pregnancy. (With radiographs, its condition can be informed).

Common Questions about Wisdom Teeth

Should wisdom teeth be extracted?

Because wisdom teeth are in the deepest part of the mouth and are difficult to access, it is hard to brush and floss them and keep them clean. Therefore, tooth decay is common. Surgery should be performed when the wisdom tooth has a lot of decay, no place for eruption, puts pressure on the adjacent tooth horizontally, or is placed horizontally in the jawbone.

When Is the Right Time to Extract Wisdom Teeth?

In some people, the complete roots are adjacent to the nerve canal, and tooth extraction may cause short-term and sometimes prolonged anesthesia.

The maxillary sinus is also a large, natural cavity. However, due to the formation and elongation of the root of the wisdom tooth, the proximity of the root to the sinus may be very close, and the sinus cavity may open or become infected during extraction.

Complications of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Common side effects of wisdom tooth extraction may be severe bleeding, nerve damage, and, most importantly, infiltration of the maxillary sinus.

Gum Tissue Grafts

If you have recently been told by your dental professional that you need a gum graft, do not panic, it sounds worse than it is. It may be necessary to protect the teeth from the damaging effects of problems like gum recession, or patients may choose to improve the appearance of their smile. It is a process in which tissues surround the tooth pulling away from it, exposing the tooth’s root. It can cause damage to nearby bones. Gum recession is a pretty common dental issue; it affects at least 10% of adults and usually goes unnoticed until it starts to get serious.

It offers a lot of oral health benefits. These benefits include:

It reinforces the gum tissues around the teeth, stabilizing and strengthening them.

It protects the areas of a future recession.

It covers the exposed roots and minimizing the risk of sensitivity.

It restores the appearance of a smile if it happens around the smile zone.

What do people need to know?

Various types of gum tissue grafts are usually performed. The type of grafts used by dental professionals will depend on the specific needs of the patient. It includes:

Connective-tissue grafts

Free gingival grafts

Pedicle grafts

Some professionals and patients prefer to use materials from tissue banks instead of from the roof of the patient’s mouth. Usually, tissue-stimulating proteins are used by dentists to help the body’s natural ability to grow tissue and bone. The professional can tell patients, which method will suit the patient and what’s best for them.

Patients will be able to go home after the procedure. But if they give the patient a sedative to help them relax, they will need to make their friends or family members drive them home.

A lot of dental insurance providers will pay part of the cost for this procedure. If you do not have insurance, its cost will depend on how much work is done. Talk to the professional for payment options.

Teeth whitening

This treatment is considered the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure in the market today. It removes discoloration, yellowing, and stains to provide clients a bright and pearly-white smile. A professional-grade whitening is what people get from the dentist’s office. It can penetrate deeper discoloration and whiten the teeth more than the products you find in the pharmacy or grocery stores.

Cosmetic Dental Tips

Here is why dental professional whitening is pretty famous:

It is one of the most affordable treatments people can avail of to improve their smiles.

The treatment is non-invasive, straightforward, and comfortable.

It is pretty safe and doesn’t harm the teeth.

There are various options, clients can choose from, like take-home trays, in-office procedures, and Whitestrips.

It can reduce the wrinkles in the face by drawing attention to the smile.

Pearly-white smiles will make people look healthier and younger.

Results can last six months to at least three years.

What do people need to know?

There are always risks of gum irritation and tooth sensitivity, especially if they use an over-the-counter whitening. These products are created as a one-size-fits-all treatment. It means that the professional can’t adjust their client’s therapy to their desired shade or tooth sensitivity.

To achieve the desired shade of white and maintain it as it is, people may need to do the treatment more often compared to professional-grade teeth whitening merchandise. Bad habits like smoking, poor oral hygiene, and coffee can minimize the whitening results’ longevity.

At-home treatment usually requires more than one session to achieve the desired result. It may range from a 15-minute session to over an hour. In-office dental whitening is usually completed in one sitting. Results can last anywhere between five months to at least three years. To keep the result as long as possible, people need to:

Brush teeth regularly using whitening toothpaste.

Floss regularly, at least every meal.

Visit dental professionals for regular cleaning and examination to remove buildup.

Avoid stain-causing food or beverage, as well as habits that can cause discoloration.

Take0home products can cost around $60

Over-the-counter ones cost around $40

In-office treatments can cost around $500

Dental crowns are used to restore teeth’ appearance, strength, function, and shape. It consists of placing tooth-shaped caps over the teeth.

Crowns are custom-made to look and feel like the patient’s natural tooth. They don’t decay and are usually made of durable products like porcelain and plastic to withstand wear and tear years. These things are also used to replace a person’s missing tooth using dental implants.

With a poorly-made crown, teeth underneath may face the risk of decay. The degree of customization can differ from professional to professional, so picking the right cosmetic dentist to do the job is very important.

Conventional crowns needed two appointments. The first session is to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and the second session is to place the crown. Its average life span is five years to 20 years, depending on the quality of the materials used.

On average, crowns can cost between $800 to $1,500.

Teeth bleaching is a way to lighten natural tooth color that makes the smile more beautiful. We sometimes want to whiten our teeth that have lost their beauty due to smoking or aging, and drinks and food stains. Teeth whitening or bleaching can also be done with a laser. In dentistry, this method involves lightening the enamel and the teeth dentin. According to an experienced Toronto teeth whitening group of dentists, the teeth’ color can be whitened by two to six degrees in the shortest possible time using the laser bleaching method. So if you have yellow teeth, using this method is recommended for you.

Toronto teeth whitening

Causes of teeth bad color

Several factors cause yellowing of the teeth over time, including the following:

  • Natural changes in tooth color (inner part of the tooth) with age
  • Excessive beverages and foods with strong colored substances such as carrots, oranges, chocolate, tea, and coffee in the diet
  • Smoking that makes teeth yellow.
  • Teeth tartar or dental calculus: A plaque that usually builds up on the tooth’s surface due to improper brushing.
  • Fillers used to treat root canal or neurosurgery
  • Taking medications such as antibiotics during tooth growth and development

How is laser teeth whitening done?

A specialist in dentistry does this method. In this method, the bleach is first placed on the teeth, and then the laser beam will be shone on them. Thus laser treatment will be done at a much higher speed. The bleaching and laser teeth whitening results are more powerful than the simple method because the bleaching gel is more powerful.

The bleaching agent used for the laser contains hydrogen peroxide, this substance decomposes in the tooth, and the resulting oxygen will reach the enamel and the tooth dentin. This process is done without any damage and change to the tooth structure, and only the colored material on the teeth will be changed. The laser light in this process helps to absorb hydrogen peroxide better and also helps whiten teeth more.

Laser in teeth whitening and bleaching has different types with different results. In this regard, the dentist finds out which laser for their treatment is more appropriate according to the clients’ teeth and hearing their expectations from the amount of teeth whitening.

The right candidates for teeth whitening

  • If the front teeth are restored, filled, veneered, or bridged, teeth whitening may be a problem, as only the natural texture of the teeth will be whitened, and there will be no change in the color of the restorations.
  • Bleaching is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation.
  • Patients with sensitive teeth or gums, for example, allergies due to receding gums or defective fillings, are advised to treat these problems first and then undergo cosmetic treatments.
  • Patients sensitive to light, undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy, or who have melanoma should not have their teeth whitened.
  • Teeth whitening is not recommended for children and adolescents under 16 years old.

Teeth whitening complications

Some patients feel tooth sensitivity during treatment and, in rare cases, experience a tingling sensation immediately after surgery. Of course, these side effects go away after a short time. Accidental irritation of the gums by bleach is also temporary and resolves after a few days.

Checking the painful teeth whitening

Some patients experience tooth sensitivity after surgery. The severity of allergies is not the same in patients. Any pain or discomfort is usually temporary and will go away within a short time. Patients often become accustomed to this procedure after a few teeth whitening, and the tooth sensitivity decreases.

The durability of teeth whitening results

Teeth stay whiter longer with regular visits to the dentist. The results durability also depends on lifestyle. Smoking and consuming colored drinks and foods, such as coffee, chateau, etc., reduce teeth longevity. Therefore, due to these factors, the teeth remain white for eight months to several years. Of course, by visiting the dentist regularly and following the recommended procedures after the operation, you can enjoy having white and shiny teeth for a longer period.

Root canal therapy is the treatment of a tooth root canal. Among the factors that lead to an emergency root canal, the common ones are tooth decay, advanced gum disease, poor hygiene, trauma, and so on.

Root canal therapy is the removal of infectious and nerve material from the pulp to protect the tooth from future microbial damage. During decay, tooth structures such as enamel and dentin change in nature and are destroyed, and there is little need for root canal treatment in these conditions. Visit this website for more information about dental emergency.

The root canal and the associated brain cavity are cavities that naturally accommodate nerve tissue and blood vessels and other cellular tissues. If tooth decay is not treated in the early stages and caries pass through the enamel and spreads to the dentin, it can then spread to the pulp space.

The entry of microbes into the dental pulp causes inflammation in the pulp, increasing the pulp’s volume. Because the dental pulp is a closed chamber, inflammation causes a sharp increase in its internal pressure. This increase in pressure leads to pressure on the tooth’s nerve endings, and the toothache begins.

Methods of Root Canal

After removing caries or dental tissue, the emergency dentist accesses the canals inside the root of the tooth. First he performs a pulpotomy, that is, by piercing the roof of the pulp and blood flowing. So, the pressure inside the pulp or nerve is reduced, and the pain is reduced.

The number of canals depends on the tooth; for example, molars have three or four canals. Pulp channels do not just contain nerves, and in some cases, their nerves may even be lost due to reduced blood flow, but bacteria and their products are present in these channels. Besides, there are blood vessels, various cells, and possibly even lymphatic vessels in these channels. These channels, which are contaminated with germs or the entry of germs, carry the infection to the root and cause the bone around the root to become inflamed and destroyed due to inflammatory reactions.

This is done by removing the root canal contents, cleaning them, forming the root canals so that the detergent reaches the end of the canals. Finally filling the root canals is performed so that they are completely closed and lead to reducing the possibility of germs and their products passing through them.

In root canal treatment, these materials are completely removed and emptied. They are then cleaned and then disinfected with a small scraper and rinsed with a washing solution, and after placing very thin rods called plastic gout, the inside of the dentin pulp is filled with substances such as amalgam or composite. After this operation, the tooth dies, and if the tooth becomes infected after this, the end of the root must be operated on in the emergency dental clinic.

Symptoms of Root Inflammation

– The onset and persistence of toothache when drinking hot and cold liquids

– Spontaneous pain, spontaneous tooth eruption

– Pain from chewing or biting

– Tooth decay and tooth abscess

– The outflow of pus or swelling

According to the cosmetic dentist, when a person loses a tooth or a tooth is removed, as a result, a gap occurs, and this gap can cause a number of problems with the mouth. On the one hand, the remaining teeth have the ability to move and move, which can affect the bite. It can also cause pain in the jaw and cause excessive wear on adjacent teeth. Drifting teeth have a higher risk of gum disease and tooth decay, since plaque has more places for pinching.

To avoid these conditions, as well as the unattractive appearance that a lost tooth may represent, many people prefer that a cosmetic dentist replace a lost tooth with a dental implant. Dental bridge is an alternative treatment that can be a viable solution for dental implants, which is cheaper.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is a fake tooth designed to be measured in patients who do not have a tooth or teeth, which gives them a natural smile. The dental bridge is attached to the adjacent teeth of the lost tooth. There are different types of dental bridges, and bridges are made of different materials. The type of dental bridge the patient will need will depend on where the missing tooth is. When a person chooses a dental bridge, the cosmetic dentist will provide a temporary bridge, creating a personalized permanent dental bridges surrey.

dental bridges surrey

Types of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are made of various materials, which may include porcelain and metal, as well as more durable materials such as zirconia and alumina. The dentist will discuss which material is best used to fill the gap in a lost tooth. To date, three dental bridges are offered for patients and specialists to choose from:

Fixed bridge: A fixed bridge fills the space by connecting an artificial tooth between two dental crowns. Crowns are used to support the bridge and are cemented in adjacent teeth in the space, so that the artificial tooth looks and feels natural in empty space. The fixed bridge is not removable.

Cantilever bridge: The cantilever bridge is also installed by connecting an adjacent tooth, similar to a fixed bridge. However, the cantilever bridge is attached to only one tooth. It is mainly used when there are no teeth on either side of the area with spaces.

The dentist will determine where the bridge will be located, what pressure it should maintain, and what budget the patient will have in order to determine what material and type of bridge will return the patient’s smile and dental health.

Healthy teeth have an impact on your overall health and sense of well-being. With this, having healthy teeth should not be taken for granted – regardless of the age. You have to see an orthodontist. Orthodontists are dentists that specialise in making the teeth move through brace or through Invisalign Calgary.

When is the right time to see an orthodontist?

The ideal age to visit an orthodontist for the first time is age 7. At this stage, not all orthodontic issues can be addressed but many can be identified. The orthodontist may be able to identify potential issues from crowding to alignment, protruding teeth, under-bites and many more.

In general, here are signs that you or your child needs an orthodontic treatment:
•    If there are overlapping teeth
•    If the jaws “pop” or click when opening and closing
•    If there is difficulty in chewing
•    If there is facial asymmetry
•    If breathing through the mouth
•    If teeth clenching or grinding
•    If there is difficulty with speech
•    If flossing is difficult

Other oral issues

For children and teenagers, the risk of cavities is greater with braces. If your child has a fight with cavities, it is imperative to wait until better oral hygiene becomes a habit. After this, the dentist can apply enamel-hardening treatment to cease the possibility of further damage.

For adults, the most serious problems are jaw soreness and grinding teeth. The good news is that it can be permanently fixed by proper orthodontic treatment. It is imperative that you go to the dentist because this can lead to broken teeth and severe jaw joint. The mouth should be relatively healthy before putting braces. Keep in mind that putting braces can cause serious disruption to your mouth.

The recommendation of dentists for children and teenagers

These days, dentists recommend that children have a consultation with orthodontists as early as age 7. If you wait for the teeth to set in, the problems will worsen. Early to mid-teenage years is actually the most common time for people to get their braces, bridges, splints, and headgear, which can help their jaw and teeth to properly align.

For teenagers that have not been evaluated by an orthodontist, most dentists will schedule the appointment especially after identifying a specific problem after the check-ups.

The recommendation of dentists for adults

Once the mouth has finished growing and the teeth have been set, the dentist can determine the areas of special wear. These are often caused by incorrect alignment of the teeth. The dentist will look at these areas and give recommendations about what kind of orthodontic treatment could help.

In the case of teenagers and children, orthodontics should be handled delicately because the mouth is still growing and the teeth are still growing in their final stages. As with the adults, it is easier to determine the right time for orthodontics because their mouth is finished growing and teeth are already set.

It is time to contact an orthodontist and schedule an appointment immediately. Teeth are important therefore it should not be ignored. The earlier you consult and have treatment, the sooner you will find comfort. With this, you can smile confidently.

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of pharmacological agents to calm and relax a patient prior to and during a dental appointment. The pharmacological agents usually belong to a class of drugs called sedatives, which exert their action by depressing the central nervous system, specifically those areas concerned with conscious awareness. Sedation dentistry is a medical procedure involving the administration of oral sedative drugs in order to facilitate a dental procedure and to reduce patient’s fear and anxiety related to the experience or entire procedure. Sedation dentistry allows your doctor to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety when visiting the dentist. The reasons why sedation dentistry is the best option for most of the patients is it gives a number of benefits to the anxious patients such as-

  • No memory of undergoing the procedure
  • No sense of time when under the sedation process
  • No sense of smell or sound
  • No fear or anxiety during the treatment
  • No needles involved
  • Ease of administration

General points

Dental patients with generalized anxiety, fear of needles and sharp instruments, prior dental trauma, or generalized fear of the dentist can take oral medication in order to reduce their anxieties. Medication additionally helps reduce memory or the sights and smells of the dental office to avoid recall of any trauma. The sedative effect allows more dentistry to be completed in fewer appointments as well as allowing complex procedures to be performed in less time.Gohere to find more about types of sedation.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is closely regulated by law, and there are three sedative states at which your dentist can administer your treatment –

  • Mild Sedation — Anxiolytics is the lightest form of sedation dentistry and is often used for patients with mild anxiety, longer procedures, or more complex situations. Mild sedation is usually administered orally. You remain awake or very sleepy throughout the entire procedure and are able to breathe on your own, but you will feel a great sense of relaxation. Nitrous oxide inhalation (laughing gas) is another form of mild to moderate sedation that results in relaxation during treatment.
  • Moderate Sedation — It is used for patients with moderate dental anxiety and for patients who need longer or more complex procedures. With conscious sedation, you will remain awake throughout your procedure, but will be in a deep state of relaxation. It is recommended that patients who receive conscious sedation have someone to accompany them to appointments because it can take several hours for the sedative to wear off and driving may be unsafe.
  • Deep Sedation — Patients receiving deep sedation go between consciousness and unconsciousness during their dental procedure. Patients often have no recollection of the treatment and are unable to respond to commands even if they are awake at times during the procedure. It is recommended that patients who receive deep sedation have someone who can accompany them.

Sedation dentistry has become popular because it offers benefits for both the patient and the dentist. For some patient groups, the use of sedation dentistry is the only way that they can get the dental care they need and improve their dental health. Go here to fetch more information.
